Oriol Calvo nou president de l'Acadèmia Internacional de Ceràmica

The director of the Museu del Càntir de Argentona, Oriol Calvo, is the new president of the International Academy of Ceramics

Last Friday, September 20, 2024, Oriol Calvo took office as president of the International Academy of Ceramics (AIC), during the closing ceremony of the institution's 51st Congress held in Portugal. Calvo obtained the position last July with 58% of the votes of the Academy members, taking over from the Norwegian ceramist Torbjorn Kavsbo.

He is now beginning a six-year term that represents a step forward in his professional career, since the AIC is the world's leading institution in the field of ceramics, with more than 1,000 members from 81 countries. Oriol Calvo has been linked to the governing bodies of the AIC for the past eight years, serving as treasurer and serving on the Council as a representative of the countries of southern Europe. This position represents the culmination of his professional career.

The new president's goals are to improve the functioning of the institution, offer more services to members and become a space for debate and generation of new knowledge in ceramics, as well as to protect and promote traditional ceramic expressions.

The International Academy of Ceramics, based in Geneva (Switzerland), founded in 1952 and recognized by UNESCO as a Non-Governmental Organization for the promotion of the arts, aims to spread and protect ceramics globally by representing ceramic artists and professionals from around the world and organizing international exhibitions and conferences. In 2016, Oriol Calvo coordinated the 47th Congress of the Academy, held in Barcelona.

The culmination of a career dedicated to ceramics

Oriol Calvo has been the director of the Museu del Càntir in Argentona since 1986. At the end of 2025, he will finish his responsibility at the head of the museum by organizing two major anniversaries: the 50th anniversary of the museum and the 75th "Festa del Càntir".

He currently combines the direction of the Museu del Càntir with the technical direction of the Spanish Association of Ceramic Cities (AeCC) and the administrative direction of the European Grouping of Ceramic Cities (AEuCC).

As director of the Museu del Càntir, Oriol Calvo has also been the director of the Argillà Argentona International Ceramics Festival, formerly known as the "Fira del Càntir", for over thirty years, and is the head of the Argentona Ceramics Workshop School, one of the main ceramics training centres in Catalonia, with 85 adult students in permanent courses and over 1,500 school children.
