The Nani Marquina jug: a tribute to the artisan tradition
The jug of the 73 Festa del Càntir is the work of Nani Marquina. Every year, the Museu del Càntir and the municipality of Argentona collaborate with prominent personalities from the world of design for the creation of the "signature pitcher", on the occasion of the celebration of the festival. This edition, the author jug is the work of Nani Marquina, renowned designer and businesswoman. Designer specializing in textiles and founder of the Nanimarquina brand, the author works under the principles of observation, innovation, emotions and the desire to modernize artisan traditions. She studied industrial design at the Escola Massana in Barcelona and in 1987, after verifying the success of her first textile designs, she would be born a nanimarquina. From its beginnings, Nani Marquina paid special attention to the investigation of raw materials and production processes, incorporating internationally renowned designers into its collections, becoming the first textile design publisher to bet on the concept of "signature rugs". The incorporation of craftsmanship and tradition as a design concept gives Marquina's designs its unique and differentiated character. Among the achievements obtained by Marquina, it is worth noting the National Design Award (2005) and the presidency of the FAD (Fomento de las Artes y Diseño) between 2014 and 2019.
The Marquina jug: beauty in imperfection In her day to day, the designer focuses on the creation and sale of textile designs. Therefore, as she explained at the press conference where the jug was presented exclusively, Marquina explains that creating a jug was “a challenge, but also an opportunity”.
For her design, Marquina was imbued with the artisan tradition of the jug, after having visited the Argentona museum. Thus, her design presents the traditional and "easy to understand" shape of the boat jug, but with a modern twist. For this creation, the designer has worked closely with the artisans, since she was clear that she wanted her jug to be "totally handmade". This artisan essence stands out especially in the brushstrokes that decorate the container and that means that no two jugs are the same. In this irregular line, the designer wants to represent what she calls “the beauty of imperfection”. With this, Marquina gives prominence to the manual gesture involved in the creation of a jug, to convey to the public "the unique ability of crafts to make us think which hands are behind the creation and what its history is".
